Magnetospheric Coordinates (B & L)

• Converts from 3D space to a simpler 2D space – orders by magnetic field line (assumes dipole geometry).
• McIlwain's shell parameter (L) is a measure of “equatorial radius.” ? labels a field line, even in a non-dipole field.
• Magnetic Field Intensity (B) – measure of “latitude.”
• L – Undefined for open field lines.
• B (static field model) doesn’t sufficiently order the XMM data due to dynamic environment
